• Strengthening Pest and Vector Control in Ghana

Delivered practical solutions in insect pest and vector management, from developing organic fertiliser (frass) and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) feed for livestock to pioneering Ghana’s first Fall Armyworm insectary and conducting the country’s first Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) release in Northern Ghana. The Institute has also introduced protein bait technology for fruit fly control and leads malaria awareness campaigns in rural communities, improving agricultural productivity and public health.

  • Driving Food Processing, Product Development, and Commercialisation

Trained communities in tomato processing and marketing since 2021 and in yoghurt production in 2025, launched NukBio Yoghurt, and continues R&D on value-added products such as Jollof sauce, Pro-gari mix, and sweet potato–soy biscuits. The Institute has also supported pork value addition, enabling El Capitano Farm to meet international standards and boosting local food quality and market competitiveness.

  • Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture and Soil Fertility

Enhanced crop and livestock productivity through climate-smart agriculture strategies and the establishment of eight demonstration farms across five regions in collaboration with the IAEA and MoFA. The Institute has developed innovative composting protocols, supported the establishment of Safisana Ghana Ltd’s compost and biogas facility, and produced over 70 tons of compost, while training 30,000 farmers and 200 extension officers in soil and nutrient management.

  • Plant Biotechnology, Genetic Improvement, and Mutation Breeding

Supplied millions of disease-free planting materials for crops such as pineapple, cassava, plantain, and sweet potato, and has released improved cassava varieties, including Tek Bankyi and four provitamin A yellow-fleshed varieties developed in collaboration with GAEC, UCC, and KNUST and approved for release to farmers by the Varietal Release and Registration Committee in 2024. As Africa’s first IAEA Collaborating Centre in Plant Breeding and Genetics (2023–2027), the Institute integrates molecular tools such as genetic fidelity testing and marker-assisted screening with tissue culture, and conducts nationwide plant disease surveillance for Banana bunchy top and Citrus greening in collaboration with CABI and MoFA.

  • Livestock and Fisheries Development

Revamped piggery and poultry farms, achieving near-zero broiler mortality, produced 2,400 broilers (with JFAMCO) and 8 tons of catfish, and supported and trained over 50 entrepreneurs nationwide. Infrastructure initiatives include the Piggery Centre, Poultry Unit, Coconut Plantation, cocoyam and plantain fields, and aquaculture dams under the GAEC Fisheries Project. The GAEC Farmers Association now generates over GHS 150,000 annually.

  • Training, Education, and Capacity Building

Trained students across multiple tertiary institutions, embedded MSc/PhD candidates in flagship projects, and carried out school outreach campaigns reaching 1,100 pupils and students with career guidance. Hands-on training includes pig production, composting, and agricultural marketing/finance for students at SNAS and farmer groups, supporting over 7 farms (2018–2020), which have enhanced jobs and food security.

Contributed to peer-reviewed research, conferences, and policy advice for MoFA, GIDA, and other agencies. Our work advances SDGs 2, 8, and 12 through research, training, and commercialisation, actively scaling the adoption of scientific outputs to improve national food systems.
